Biola University
Making
its world wide debut at the Biola Film Festival, AvsB:
A Study of Competition, has brought a new level of
animation and attention to the Film program at Biola University.
The first animated vignette of AvsB, entitled Logobots,
sought to mimic the bizarre but amusing competition styling's
of Battlebots, a Comedy Channel show in which home-made
robots fight for up to three minutes in a specially designed
arena filled with sharp objects and menacing hammers. Though
the particular match tonight did not last the full three
minutes, it was full of some amazing sights and outstanding
competition
that pleased the audience to a degree never before seen with
a Biola animation project.
With
sophisticated use of music, sound effects, and inventive dialogue,
the Logobots Production Team has done a superb job in replicating
the action and excitement of the popular cable show. Though
the future of AvsB is uncertain at this time, Logobots should
be seen as proud accomplishment for the Team and the University.
When
asked about the series of vignettes planned for AvsB, Mr. Zapata
commented that
"Originally
we had planned on doing more than one vignette for this
years show. However, production training
took longer than expected and we cut the list down to
Logobots in order to finish it on time. Now that people are
aware
of the
project, we won't need to be as secretive about it and
can have multiple groups working with different animation
software
producing different vignettes based on our concept. But
we'll just have to wait and see how popular this thing becomes."
What's
next? Well, the end of tonight's episode hinted at the next
vignette of competition. Based loosely on characters from Star
Wars, Logo's with Lightsabers will definitely draw from a large
cross-section of fans of the original series created
by George Lucas. Stay tuned for more information in the coming
months.

LOGOBOTS
The bot competition during tonight's episode was explosive
and full of metal-on-metal action. Battl-Bob
and Mister Apu, custom robot versions of their respective school
logos, twisted and turned around the arena floor as they attempted
to dismantle each other. Armed with a saw-bladed rotating shield,
Mister Apu caused a lot of problems for Battl-Bob early on
in the match. On several occasions it seemed like certain doom
for Battl-Bob. However,
as the grace of heaven would have it, Battl-Bob was able to
come back and claim victory over Mister Apu by using the flamethrower
of Truth. Not even the well designed shield of Mister Apu could
withstand the onslaught of heat and flame. In just under 1
minute and 40 seconds, Battl-Bob finished the job and moves
onto the next round. Mister Apu, on the other hand, will need
to go back to the drawing board for a much needed re-design.
When
will the next round be? No one really knows. But it will sure
be a nice surprise to those who will be waiting. Stay tuned! |
